New year, new projects

January 17, 2020

Happy 2020! I am excited for everything this new year has in store both personally and at work.

The first half of this school year had been… an overwhelming blur. After spending much of the summer reorganizing and cataloging books at the middle school, the school year started and things have been going nonstop. Winter break was a much-needed time to take a deep breath, and I realized that I haven’t updated this blog all school year! Yikes.

This fall was crazy busy at the elementary school with getting used to a set teaching schedule and reorganizing new furniture, which has been a lot of fun. John Schu from Scholastic met with our 2nd-4th graders at the elementary school, and then ran a session with our teachers after school for an inspiring inservice about reading and capturing our students' hearts through stories.

I had the chance to present at the AISLE/IATE conference in Springfield in October, where I got to hear from incredible authors Linda Sue Park, Aisha Saeed, Ibi Zoboi, and Laurel Snyder. It was possibly the best conference I’ve ever attended, and I was so honored to be a part of it! Especially since librarians are often “islands” within the school community, connecting and networking with other professionals is always rejuvenating.

This is my first year as a member of the Rebecca Caudill Award selection committee, so I’ve been reading at a furious pace to get through all 50 books before the meeting on February 1st in Champaign! I’ve been using the Caudill list for years in my middle school, so I’m very excited to go argue for my favorite titles to be included on next year’s list and see what the process is all about.

In early December, I applied for and was appointed to fill a temporary position as a trustee on the board of my local public library. This is a whole new realm for me, learning about budgeting, legal, and administrative procedures for a large public library. I will have to officially run for the position in the spring of 2021 during our next local consolidated election, but I am looking forward to learning more about the inner workings of my amazing local library system and getting involved in my community.
